When a film opens with a character escaping from Hell in a 1963 Buick, it should be obvious that we’re in for a wild ride.
Nicholas Cage stars as Milton, the aforementioned escapee, quickly meeting up with Amber Heard as Piper, a Dodge Charger-driving waitress, who team up to rescue Milton’s kidnapped daughter from a Satanic cult. From the moment Drive Angry opens, the action is insistent. Patrick Lussier tells his story through a series of comic book-style fights, stylish shoot-outs and epic car chases.
Billing itself as an exploitation film, Drive Angry seems more like a parody of the genre, enjoying taking the elements of exploitation cinema and playing them out to absurd proportions. It is silly, but a lot of fun.
