Not your typical home-invasion thriller, Who Invited Them spends more of its short and sharp runtime exploring social discomfort, rather than the shock and gore typical of the genre.
Adam (Ryan Hanson) and Margo (Melissa Tang) throw a housewarming party to show off their new home, a large, mid-century house in the Hollywood Hills, though the expansive house and Adam’s over-enthusiasm see the majority of guests excuse themselves earlier than anticipated. When the only remaining guests remaining are quirky neighbours Sasha (Perry Mattfeld) and Tom (Timothy Granaderos,) their quirkiness and apparent casual comfort within someone else’s home only further highlight Margo and Adam’s lack of familiarity with the lifestyle of their new neighbourhood.
Initially released as a Shudder exclusive, the film added some welcome comic relief to the horror-focused streaming service. The blend of dread and satire work well, particularly in a film running less than 90 minutes. Who Invited Them is available to stream free and ad-free in Australia.
