The Terrifier films have been the focus of sensational headlines focused on audience reactions at screenings – mass walk-outs in outrage at depictions of violence, audience members fainting in fear – and now Damien Leone’s series is available to stream free at home, where the media can’t comment upon viewers’ reactions.
The films focus on the Miles County Clown, the murderous harlequin introduced in a videotape given to trick-or-treaters in Leone’s earlier film, All Hallows’ Eve. David Howard Thornton creates a new slasher icon: carrying on the tradition of silent slashers like Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers, but communicating via mood-swinging mime is playing the role to perfection. Thornton’s performance is strong enough to negate the need for a detailed backstory, though sequels delve into one.
Terrifier 2 ramps up the violence to the level of exploitation horror, and makes the Clown’s supernatural origin overt. We’re introduced to Sienna, played by Lauren LaVera, who seemed to be connected to the Miles County Clown through her artist father, and to stylish, 1980s-inspired graphics. In Terrifier 3, the Miles County Clown returns to slash through Christmas in Japanese gore video style.
