Right at the time when horror cinema was undergoing a transformation, indulging in sprawling, symbolic genre epics, along came Scare Package to rebel against the trends. Delightfully stupid, gory, and never taking itself too seriously.
An anthology horror, the stories are centred around video store which catalogues its collection into peculiarly specific subgenres. Rad Chad (Jeremy King) hires Hawn (Hawn Tran) as his new employee in the store. A regular cinephile customer (Byron Brown) tries to impress the pair by recalling summaries of the videos in the store, leading to each of the stories showcased. Expect exaggerated parodies of horror tropes and cameos that will appeal to genre fans.
Although Scare Package doesn’t have the style of similar films like those of the V/H/S series, or the production values of The Mortuary Collection, it is likely to appeal to fans of studios like Troma or Full Moon. And although it is unlikely to win awards, it was popular enough on its original platform Shudder to warrant the production of a sequel. Scare Package is available to stream free and ad-free in Australia..
