Mention has been made several times here of the high quality of Australian young adults television, but Canada also has a long history of producing content for children and teens which is both engaging and respectful to its audience. The animated sit-com 6teen is a prime example, blending stylish animation, teen drama and surprising moments of warmth.
Created by writing duo Jennifer Pertsch and Tom McGillis, a precursor to their breakout hit Total Drama Island and the franchise it spawned, 6teen opens with a group of teens forming a bond over their first jobs at different stores in the massive Galleria Mall. Although the plots may not be groundbreaking, with stories regularly centred on friendship, dating, and the balance of school, work and home, they are treated with a style and respect that elevates the show beyond the usual standard of after-school cartoons.
A product of its era, the show has a distinctive Flash animated style, yet retains its sense of style, with characters cast in bold, vector colours, against blocky backgrounds. It gives the series the feel of taking place within an artwork by Shag. The full series of 6teen is available to stream free and legally in Australia.
