Before the rise of on-demand streaming, television ran to a schedule, and for a long time, it followed a fairly routine format: Soap operas during day, before cartoons and young adult programming after school finished for the day, perhaps some game shows or sit-coms, news and current affairs, then the heavily-advertised prime-time block. Some called it a night once they’d seen the latest TV trend, while others continued watching for the late-night programming. In the 1980s and 90s, anthology horror was a staple of midnight viewing, with different stories each week, often presented by colourful hosts, like the Crypt Keeper and even Freddy Krueger himself.
Based on the series of films originally helmed by George A. Romero and Stephen King, the Creepshow TV series sees the exciting return of the late-night horror genre. Like the films upon which it was based, the series is hosted by the strangely non-verbal Creep, who here is presented in a range of media: sometimes via make-up effects, animation or puppetry. Episodes typically feature one or two stand-alone stories, styled after pulpy classic horror comic stories, leading to plenty of silly scares. Despite this, the series includes several innovative moments – a character creates a virtual reality environment to insert himself into the film Horror Express, interacting with the characters from the original movie; meanwhile, an episode takes place alongside the events of the film Night of the Living Dead, with the stories seeming to intersect with one another.
The Creepshow series was created for, and originally streamed exclusively on, the dedicated horror platform Shudder, suitably allowing filmmakers to innovate within the genre. The full series is now available to stream free and legally in Australia.
