Joe Dante continues his fascination with the chaos caused by hoards of small, vicious creatures that he started with Piranha, with the more family-friendly Gremlins. It is a theme he would continue in his later film, Small Soldiers.
It is Christmastime in the idyllic town of Kingston Falls when inventor and travelling salesman Rand Peltzer (Hoyt Axton) returns home from a business trip to New York City with a gift for his son – a new pet, the mysterious, furry Mogwai. Naming him Gizmo, the pet comes with strict rules, which, when inevitably broken, unleash hoards of chaotic gremlins on the town.
The film spawned a sequel in 1990, with a third film reportedly currently in production, along with a TV series in 2023. The original film is available to stream free.
