A streaming service operated globally by the Japan Foundation, with the goal of introducing Japanese culture to the world.
When restrictions on film screenings prevented the 2020 and 2021 incarnations of the Japanese Film Festival from operating in cinemas as usual, a free online festival was offered instead, as JFF Plus. As the festival returned to cinemas in subsequent years, the JFF Plus service continued – usually offering online home rentals of a ‘greatest hits’ selection from the festivals, and sometimes free short film collections.
In August 2024, a new service was launched, JFF Theater, a completely free platform, offering a rotating-roster of ad-free Japanese movies, television and anime year-round. Following the film festival format, programming is usually released in blocks following a certain theme, for a set period – the themed films are typically available for around three months. JFF Theater is currently available in web browser only, and doesn’t have dedicated apps, but has been tested and works well on most Smart TVs.
