Seven West Media began experimenting with online media with the launch of its i7 website in 2000. The channel partnered with AOL to boost it’s online presence as AOL7 for a while, but it when they joined forces with Yahoo and rebranded their online content as Yahoo7 in 2006 that the foundations for their free streaming service were set.

Just as the Nine Network‘s teamed up with a tech company to drive it’s online presence, what had started with highlight reels and livestreams of news and sport on Yahoo7 grew to a dedicated platform in 2010, then called Plus7. Yahoo and Seven aimed to drive viewers online with programming bypassing broadcast and going straight to streaming, something which was novel at the time.

The service was relaunched as 7plus in 2017, with apps available for smart TVs, games consoles and mobile devices. The platform plays host to the expected in-house content, like locally produced drama, reality, lifestyle, and informational programming, but also to a permanent library of films and international TV series. Seven continue to promote programming exclusive to its free streaming platform, often as being too risqué for broadcast television. No matter which device is used, the apps perform well, with ads spaced sensibly and not overwhelming.
