Not only is ABC iview available to stream movies and TV shows for free and without advertising, but many internet service providers also allow their users to stream from it without eating into their data allowance.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation were an early innovator in online content, finding ways to extend their locally-produced TV to computer screens as early as the 1990s, with programme-specific websites which transformed weekly with the broadcast of new episodes: Love is a Four Letter Word‘s mural filled with correspondence including each week’s musical guests, Welcher & Welcher shared mock-legal documents related to the latest storyline, and by 2003, they aired what was dubbed the country’s first ‘multi-platform mystery,’ Fat Cow Motel, requiring viewers to combine what they’d seen on TV with additional clues found online to solve weekly mysteries.
The dedicated iview service was launched in 2008 for viewers to catch up on missed episodes of local series. Today, the platform is available on both Apple and Android mobile devices, almost every smart TV infrastructure, and games consoles (though support for older consoles has started to be dropped with updates focused on including more modern systems.)
Along with allowing access to catch-up of aired television content, the service now boasts a library of local and international film and television, livestreams of each state’s local ABC channels from anywhere in the country, streaming-only channels, and options to create profiles for different access and lists for each family member.
