The second part of original Evil Dead film trilogy starts peculiarly: an abridged and modified retelling of the events of the first film in the series, presumably hoping to avoid confusing those new to the franchise. Michigan college student Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) recalls his first visit to a cabin in the woods with his girlfriend Linda (Denise Bixler,) and subsequent escape from ancient demons.
As morning comes, Annie (Sarah Berry,) the daughter of the cabin’s owner arrives with her research partner Ed (Richard Domeier) to continue the work her father started in the cabin – studying the Necronomicon ex Mortis – Book of the Dead. Inevitably, the demons are re-awakened, and Ash’s weekend of fighting for survival continues.
With a larger budget than it’s predecessor, Sam Raimi‘s experimental special effects are allowed to take on greater proportions, with impressive make-up effects and stop-motion animation, all continuing the style of the original film. It is in Evil Dead 2 that the series experiments with the comedy that would see the series become the cult favourite that it remains.
