Positioning itself as a documentary on the career of 1970s talk show host Jack Delroy (David Dastmalchian,) Late Night With The Devil shifts between mockumentary, horror and drama without feeling disjointed. After charting Jack’s rise to celebrity status, we see a shift when Jack’s wife (Georgina Haig) dies after a battle with cancer, and after a break, his return to the screen – with his revived late-night programme featuring increasingly sensational guests.
Most of the film concerns the events of special Halloween episode of Jack’s live ‘Night Owls’ programme, with a panel to include a psychic (Fayssal Bazzi,) a sceptic (Ian Bliss,) and a parapsychologist (Laura Gordon) and her subject (Ingrid Torelli,) the sole-survivor of a Satanic suicide cult.
Writers and directors Colin and Cameron Cairnes have created scenes that feel like an authentic taping of a programme from the era – so much so that when Jack throws to commercial, the scenes filmed of chaos unfolding off-camera feel like being taken somewhere privileged.
