Joe Keery and Camila Morrone in Marmalade

Billed as a romantic heist film, Marmalade has more in common with The Usual Suspects than it does to True Romance or A Life Less Ordinary. It is a movie that calls for concentration, without feeling too heavy, or slowing down for long enough to drag.

On being shown to his prison cell, Baron (Joe Keery) recounts his crime and motivation to his new cell-mate, Otis (Aldis Hodge,) a self-confessed escape artist. Baron’s life had been mundane, working a menial job to support his ailing mother (Amy Warner,) until drug companies raise the price of her medication. When the enigmatic Marmalade (Camilla Marone) presents him with the opportunity to support his mother via crime, Baron is initially reluctant, but seduced by desperation and Marmalade’s promise of a brighter future for them all.

Charming, despite its criminal subject matter, Marmalade makes one hope that actor and first time director Keir O’Donnell will spend more time behind the camera soon. Marmalade is available to stream free and ad-free in Australia.
