Zosia Mamet and Aristotle Athari in Molli and Max in the Future

Set in some distant, anachronistic future, Molli and Max meet by chance in space, and spend the next 12 years plotting a course through space, dimensions, careers and romance. Taking cues from the production of films like Sky Captain and the World Of Tomorrow, the film makes the most of chromakey sets to place the action in dramatic locations.

Molli and Max launches with a style that it doesn’t forget throughout – a jazz score, over vibrant, neon backdrops and a fluctuating aspect ratio. This, along with its rapidly-moving plot, might take some viewers a while to get used to, but will likely appeal to the audience of films like Everything Everywhere All at Once. Although the film includes huge events – robot wars, a universal plague, and the take-over of the galaxy by a violent war-lord – it is always secondary to the will-they-won’t-they romantic comedy playing out between the leads, Zosia Mamet and Aristotle Athari. The film is a fascinating debut feature for Michael Lukk Litwak, and leaves us excited to see what kind of story he’ll write next.
