Jane Curtin, Harriet Sansom Harris, Ben Kingsley and Jade Quon in Jules.

When we think of science fiction drama, we probably envisage the spectacle of films like Arrival or Interstellar. In contrast, Jules plays more like a cosy drama that the usual special effects-laden blockbusters.

Ben Kingsley plays Milton, a retiree living in a small USA town who announces at one of his regular city council meeting appearances that a flying saucer has crash landed in his backyard, destroying his prized azaleas. His eccentric neighbours (played by comedy icons Harriet Sansom Harris from Frasier and Third Rock From The Sun‘s Jane Curtin) are concerned that the comment is a sign of Milton’s worsening dementia, until they meet the spacecraft’s alien inhabitant, dubbed Jules (stuntwoman Jade Quon.)

What follows is light on action, but high on gradually unfolding drama as the trio work to balance their own experiences in aging with their attempts to help Jules return home.
