The Nine Network were one of the earliest players in Australian television streaming, before the term had even been coined. This was initially via video content made available online via Nine’s partnership with Microsoft as nineMSN. After uploading episodes for catch-up viewing, and highlights of local shows, the service started to build a catalogue of archival and new content.

The service has rebranded through a number of iterations, some a little more experimental than others, before arriving at the solid service that it is today. With each rebrand, support for some older platforms has been discontinued – for example, everything other than latest models of PlayStation consoles run the newest app, and older streaming boxes seem to struggle.

9now has a robust catalogue of local and international television and a rotating roster of movies, thanks to the TV network’s distribution partnerships, though many of the movies are daytime fare – from Nine’s partner Lifetime Movie Network. They’ve grown their programming over the past few years with dedicated sections for content from Pedestrian.TV. Along with its catalogue of on-demand offerings, the service includes additional streaming only channels, particularly for exclusive sports events.
