30 years after the events of Sam Raimi‘s original Evil Dead film trilogy, Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) is living in a camper trailer outside Michigan, still driving the same Oldsmobile that carried him across time, and spinning heroic lies about his missing hand to pick up women while grappling with PTSD after his years of battling Deadites. In a desperate attempt to impress a date, an inebriated Ash reads from the Necronomicon – stored under his collection of porn and drugs – summoning the Evil Dead.
Whilst making arrangements to leave town and his retail job, Ash teams up with his co-worker Pablo (Ray Santiago,) whose shaman uncle told him similar stories of demons, and Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo,) Pablo’s workplace crush, who has received news from her father of visits by her deceased mother. As familiar and new supernatural threats descend, the group are pursued by Ruby (Lucy Lawless,) someone with an apparent connection to Professor Knowby, the original translator of the Necronomicon ex Mortis.
The series leans into the comedy that became more prevalent through the first three films, but doesn’t shy away from over-the-top horror, whilst reconciling the tangled history of contradictions that the time travel and mystical elements of the franchise’s films, comics and video games spun.
