The benefit of streaming that is usually promoted is the ‘on-demand’ aspect: One can decide what to watch and when. One of the less-discussed consequences of the rise of streaming is the option for television productions to deviate from the formats demanded of commercial television, typically 22- or 47-minutes of content, designed to fit into a half-hour or hour-long block with time for ads.
Although Tubi is, like commercial television, financed by advertising, its Tubi Original series, Bite Size Terror, has chosen its own format. A horror anthology in the style of Tales from the Crypt or Creepshow, what sets this series apart is its ultra-brief duration. None of the individual episodes runs for longer than 15 minutes, letting us watch a full story unfold before the need for any ad breaks arises. Featuring an unpredictable mix of horror sub-genres, the series showcases the works of different directors and cast each episode, offering different styles and effects.
An innovative project, with the perfect format for satisfying a craving for the spooky before bed, when it’s too late for even a standard television episode.
