An animated sci-fi intended for adults, Gandahar was produced in France in the 1980s, but feels like it could have been made at any point between the 1960s and today.
Gandahar seems like an idyllic world: the inhabitants live peacefully, harmoniously interacting with the animal and plant-life around them (and even species that seem to blur the definitions of each.) When the mysterious Men of Metal arrive, with the ability to turn the people of Gandahar to stone, Sylvain is nominated by the Council of Women to investigate. In so doing, he encounters blends of the organic and technological, and starts to uncover that Gandahar may not be the Utopia it seems.
For its English language release, Bob and Harvey Weinstein made cuts and changes to dialogue, along with a new, more explicitly sci-fi soundtrack, and retitled the film for its initial release as Light Years, though it was later released under its original title. Both the original French version, and US release, are available to stream fee in Australia
