Discussions of a remake of Troma’s most famous film, 1984’s The Toxic Avenger were taking place up to twenty years before the film eventually saw a release. Even when it was finally screened, the movie had a slow-burn release, touring festivals to acclaim before seeing a limited mainstream cinema run.
Winston Gooze (Peter Dinklage) is a doting single step-parent to Wade (Jacob Tremblay,) an artistic high school student. After a devastating medical diagnosis, Winston approaches his boss (Kevin Bacon) for support without success, and in a desperate attempt at justice, encounters vigilante JJ (Taylour Paige.) Of course, contact with toxic chemicals instils Winston with powers to become a new kind of Monster Hero.
Rather than being a straight remake, 2023’s The Toxic Avenger tells its own store, taking inspiration from the original. It includes plenty of nods to both the original film and the work of Troma Films more broadly, and features heavy doses of the brand of humour fans of the studio will appreciate. The new Toxic Avenger is now available to stream free and legally in Australia.
