Plex was launched in 2008 as a media server software program, allowing users to share their saved video and music files between their devices. It gained popularity amongst home cinema aficionados for its ease of set up and use, with an interface simple enough to be controlled with a TV remote control when installed on a computer linked to a theatre room TV.
With the rise of streaming, Plex was updated to allow users to opt in or out of the different streaming services they subscribe to – whether paid or free – and search only those services to find where a movie or TV show is available to watch.
In 2019, Plex added their own ad-supported library of movies and television to watch, with a vast array of big-name content available, particularly for those looking for children’s cartoons, anime, and classic cinema.
