It might seem too obvious to include YouTube in a list of sources for free and legal streaming content, but, while it has set a benchmark – and, arguably, popularised the technology which made all streaming possible – amongst its user-generated videos are hidden free studio gems. Finding them within the realms of attempts at piracy and creative countering of YouTube’s copyright detection measures can be a challenge, though.
When accessing YouTube’s front page, the ‘Explore’ menu includes an option for ‘Movies & TV.’ This is where YouTube keeps it’s studio content, with options to purchase or rent, or to watch professional content ‘Free with Ads.’ Unfortunately, there is currently no option to filter results to only include free titles, and the general search returns as much user-generated content as studio titled.
Although browsing for this purpose on YouTube can be tricky, there is an interesting selection of studio films available to find. If the purpose is to spend 90 minutes watching a film, the risk on YouTube is of scrolling through the selection for more time than is spent actually viewing.
